Alpha-GPC
Alpha-GPC (L-Alpha Glycerylphosphorylcholine)
A highly bioavailable choline source that supports acetylcholine production for focus, memory, and athletic performance.
Alpha-GPC is one of the most bioavailable forms of choline, efficiently crossing the blood-brain barrier to support acetylcholine synthesis. It's used for cognitive enhancement and has some evidence for power output in athletes. Often paired with racetams in nootropic stacks.
Mechanisms of Action
Acetylcholine Precursor
Provides choline for neurotransmitter synthesis
Membrane Phospholipids
Supports brain cell membrane structure
Growth Hormone Support
May acutely increase growth hormone
Recommended Dose
300-600mg daily
Optimal Timing
- Morning for cognitive enhancement
- 30-60 min before workout for performance
Can be taken without food
Best Form
Alpha-GPC 50% powder or capsules
Alternatives: Alpha-GPC 100% (less common), Liquid
Most products are 50% Alpha-GPC (rest is carrier). Hygroscopic (absorbs moisture) so keep dry. Some pre-workouts include it.
Duration
Minimum: 2 weeks
Optimal: 8 weeks
Cycling: Some cycle 5 days on, 2 days off or 4 weeks on, 1 week off to maintain sensitivity
Note: Can be taken with or without food. Morning for cognitive benefits. Pre-workout (300-600mg) for athletic performance.

Sharper Focus
Improved concentration and mental clarity
Memory Support
Enhanced learning and recall
Power Output
Possible improvement in explosive power
Headache
Can cause headaches in some, especially at high doses
Choline is important during pregnancy; Alpha-GPC less studied
One study suggested possible cardiovascular concerns; more research needed
Who Should NOT Take This
- History of stroke or TIA (one study raised concerns, needs more research)
Drug Interactions
May counteract anticholinergic effects
Additive cholinergic effects
Possible Side Effects
Tip: Reduce dose; may indicate too much acetylcholine
Tip: Reduce dose
Tip: Take with food
Warnings
- Headaches may indicate dose is too high
- One 2021 study raised cardiovascular concerns - more research needed
- Hygroscopic - keep container sealed

“Finally, the review identifies existing knowledge gaps and proposes new research areas to promote the development of high value-added and health-promoting products containing GPC.© 2025 Institute of Food Technologists.”
Key Findings:
- Due to its high choline content (41% by weight) and ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, GPC is considered one of the most utilized sources of choline.
- The review also highlights recent bioactivity evaluation results of GPC in animal models and human clinical tests, with a focus on cognitive dysfunction, cardiometabolic disorders, anti-aging, and ergogenic effects.

“A brief outlook on the future perspectives and unsolved challenges was also proposed.© 2025 Institute of Food Technologists®.”
Key Findings:
- Encouraged by the policy incentives, there is likely to be a new upsurge in the research interest surrounding l-α-GPC.
- To fully capitalize on these emerging opportunities, we present a comprehensive review of l-α-GPC.
- The chemical properties, pharmacological characteristics, safety assessments, and preparation methods of l-α-GPC were summarized.
- A brief outlook on the future perspectives and unsolved challenges was also proposed.© 2025 Institute of Food Technologists®.

“α-GPC alone or in combination with donepezil improved cognition, behavior, and functional outcomes among patients with neurological conditions associated with cerebrovascular injury.”
Key Findings:
- We found significant effects of α-GPC in combination with donepezil on cognition [4 RCTs, mean difference (MD):1.72, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.20 to 3.25], functional outcomes [3 RCTs, MD:0.79, 95% CI: 0.34 to 1.23], and behavioral outcomes [4 RCTs; MD: -7.61, 95% CI: -10.31 to -4.91].
- We also observed that patients who received α-GPC had significantly better cognition than those who received either placebo or other medications [MD: 3.50, 95% CI: 0.36 to 6.63].
- α-GPC alone or in combination with donepezil improved cognition, behavior, and functional outcomes among patients with neurological conditions associated with cerebrovascular injury.
Scapicchio PL • The International journal of neuroscience (2013)
“In light of the limited therapeutical results obtained in the past decades by the use of cholinesterase inhibitors in dementia, and of the relevance of their side effects in long-lasting therapies, it is desirable to reconsider alpha-GPC in larger carefully controlled studies not only as monotherapy but also in association with cholinesterase inhibitor drugs.”
Key Findings:
- Choline alphoscerate (alpha-glyceryl-phosphorylcholine, alpha-GPC) is a semisynthetic derivative of phosphatidylcholine with central parasympathomimetic action.
- This action is, on the basis of its use in pathologies, characterized by cognitive deficits of neurodegenerative or vascular nature.
- In a number of clinical studies, alpha-GPC demonstrated benefit in patients with cognitive dysfunction.

“The main challenge during the analysis was methodological, population, and statistical heterogeneity, which required not only the use of a random effects model but also active search and exclusion of some sources.”
Key Findings:
- The study demonstrated a statistically significant effect of Gliatilin in treating patients with vascular or post-traumatic MCI.
- It also showed statistically significant superiority of its parenteral (or parenteral followed by oral) administration (for at least 28 days) compared to basic therapy in patients with vascular MCI.
- The main challenge during the analysis was methodological, population, and statistical heterogeneity, which required not only the use of a random effects model but also active search and exclusion of some sources.
- However, despite several limitations, the internal consistency and absence of contradictions in the analysis results demonstrated the robustness of the evidence obtained.
