- This hormone progressively declines at the rate of 2% per year.
- It is beneficial in autoimmune disorders like lupus erythematosus, immune modulation, muscle building and hormonal problems.
- DHEA is known as an anti-ageing hormone, in osteoporosis and in dementia.
Effects of diosgenin and its derivatives on atherosclerosis
Wu FC et al. • Food & function (2019)
It is noteworthy that newly synthesized DSG derivatives and DSG delivery systems have good antithrombotic activity and pharmacokinetic characteristics.
- Numerous preclinical studies have shown that DSG has great potential in the treatment of various cardiovascular diseases in vivo and in vitro, especially in atherosclerosis.
- This review mainly discusses the effects of DSG on endothelial dysfunction, lipid profile, and macrophage foam cell formation, VSMC viability, thrombosis and inflammation during the formation of atherosclerosis.
- Also, the mechanism of DSG on atherosclerosis was elaborated in detail.
Complementary and alternative medicine in the treatment of menopausal symptoms
Shou C et al. • Chinese journal of integrative medicine (2011)
Future larger and better controlled studies testing the effectiveness of these treatments are needed.
- An increased number of women seek the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for treating menopausal symptoms.
- This review analyzes the evidence from systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials and epidemiological studies of using herbal medicine (Black cohosh, Dong quai, St John's wart, Hops, Wild yam, Ginseng, and evening primrose oil) and acupuncture for the treatment of menopausal symptoms.
- Evidence supporting the efficacy and safety of most CAM for relief of menopausal symptoms are limited.
Evaluating the evidence for over-the-counter alternatives for relief of hot flashes in menopausal women
Kelley KW et al. • Journal of the American Pharmacists Association : JAPhA (2010)
Women should be encouraged to implement therapeutic lifestyle changes to assist them with hot flash management.
- Women should be encouraged to implement therapeutic lifestyle changes to assist them with hot flash management.
- Based on the current literature, alternative OTC therapies do not have consistent, beneficial data to support their use in hot flash management.
- Further research warranted to confirm findings
Nonhormonal therapies for hot flashes in menopause
Carroll DG • American family physician (2006)
Further randomized controlled trials are needed.
- Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and venlafaxine have been shown to reduce hot flashes by 19 to 60 percent and were well tolerated by study participants.
- Soy isoflavones reduced hot flashes by 9 to 40 percent in some trials, but most trials showed no difference compared with placebo.
- Black cohosh and red clover also have had inconsistent results, with some trials showing benefit and some no difference compared with placebo.
Hot flashes revisited: pharmacological and herbal options for hot flashes management. What does the evidence tell us?
Haimov-Kochman R et al. • Acta obstetricia et gynecologica Scandinavica (2005)
A critical review of the literature shows that progesterone may have an independent effect on relieving hot flashes.
- A critical review of the literature shows that progesterone may have an independent effect on relieving hot flashes.
- New nonhormonal agents such as selective serotonin-uptake-inhibitor anti-depressants and a new anti-convulsant gabapentin yielded promising results on small well-conducted studies.
- Isoflavone's effect on hot flashes is variable and inconsistent, and only modest and delayed improvement of symptoms could be expected by BC and vitamin E.
Effect of wild yam cream on menopausal symptoms
Komesaroff PA et al. • Climacteric (2001)
Wild yam cream showed no significant effects on menopausal symptoms compared to placebo.
- No significant effect vs placebo
- No change in hormone levels
- Well-tolerated

Value addition and influence of succinylation levels on the quality of wild yam (Discorea villosa) starch
Raji AO et al. • Food & function (2020)
Isolation and subsequent succinylation improved the wild yam starch quality and reduced its anti-nutritional factors.
- The percentage succinyl content and degree of substitution increased from 0-10.45% and 0-0.19% respectively.
- The amylose, amylopectin, α-amylase and α-glucosidase activities varied from 49.88-59.70%, 40.29-50.11%, 0.17-0.96 and 0.62-10.07 respectively.
- Isolation and subsequent succinylation improved the wild yam starch quality and reduced its anti-nutritional factors.
Bitterness and toxicity in wild yam (Dioscorea spp.) tubers of Nepal
Bhandari MR et al. • Plant foods for human nutrition (Dordrecht, Netherlands) (2005)
Domestic cooking methods were found to be very efficient in removing bitterness, thus making the bitter yams palatable.
- The toxic alkaloid, dioscorine and histamine (an allergen) were not detected in these tubers, whereas cyanogens (as HCN equivalent) content were found ranging from 3.2 to 6.0 ppm.
- Our results revealed that Nepali wild yam tubers are not toxic varieties, as they do not contain either toxic dioscorine or histamine and cyanogens contents were satisfactorily below the safety limits.
- The inflammation and occasional toxicity observed could possibly be due to the presence of high level of oxalate in these tubers.
The anticancer potential of steroidal saponin, dioscin, isolated from wild yam (Dioscorea villosa) root extract in invasive human breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231 in vitro
Aumsuwan P et al. • Archives of biochemistry and biophysics (2016)
We propose that DS has potential to be used as an anti-invasive agent in breast cancer.Published by Elsevier Inc.
- Cellular invasion of MDA-MB-231 was reduced by 65 ± 5% in the presence of 5.76 μM DS.
- DS (5.76 μM)-treated MDA-MB-231 cells exhibited the morphological characteristic of epithelial-like cells; mRNA expression of DNMT3A, TET2, TET3, ZFPM2 and E-cad were increased while TET1, VIM and MMP9 were decreased.
- Our data suggested that DS-mediated pathway could promote GATA3 expression at transcription and translation levels.
